When the antlers are growing, they are soft to the touch or spongy, unlike horns. Horns are keratinized tissue and antlers are organs. Antlers have blood vessels, nerves, skin, cartilage and bone. Elk 'velvet' is the outermost layer of skin covering a growing antler. Velvet is hair-like in appearance and texture.
Elk velvet can be called: elk antler velvet, antler elk velvet, antler velvet, or just velvet.
Velvet is considered to be the most important nutrient in traditional eastern medicine and has been used for centuries to successfully promote wellness through strengthening the immune system, boosting mental clarity and treating aching joints. It is also believed to balance testosterone and estrogen levels while raising hCG - human chorionic gonadotropin - in the body.
American Velvet comes from North American Elk Antlers. The North American Elk is often reveled at their size, power, and endurance and are considered to be one of the healthiest and most robust members of the deer family.
Elk antlers grow at incredible speed and are considered a scientific anomaly as why and how they are able to grow so quickly. During their growth the antlers have blood and cartilage circulating and forming which is where the medicinal benefits are derived.
Each Spring the antler cycle begins anew and the skin around the pedicle expands and grows, initiating new antler growth. The hard antler from the previous season is cast off and the growth of the new season's velvet crop begins. It is then that the velvet is harvested for its medicinal and performance qualities.
